Cuprous Oxide

Synonyms: Copper(I) oxide

CAS No.: 1317-39-1

Formula: Cu2O

M.W.: 143.09

Feature

Red powder. Specific Wt.: 6.00 m.p.: 12350C B.P.: 18000C. Cuprous oxide can be easily oxidized in humid air, soluble in acids and ammonia water, ammonium chloride, insoluble in water and alcohols. Will be slowly oxidized into cupric oxide in humid air; stable in dry air; toxic.

Application

Copper(I) oxide is used for ship bottom anti-fouling paint, bactericides, ceramic colorant, glass staining agent, and analytical reagent etc.

– Pigment: Cuprous oxide has been used historically as a red pigment in ceramics, glass, and paints.
– Semiconductor: It is a p-type semiconductor material, meaning it can conduct electricity when it contains positive charge carriers (holes). Cuprous oxide has applications in solar cells, gas sensors, and photovoltaic devices.
– Antifouling Agent: Cuprous oxide has been used as an antifouling agent in marine paints to prevent the growth of organisms on ship hulls.
– Catalysis: It has shown catalytic properties in various chemical reactions.
– Superconductivity: Cuprous oxide exhibits superconductivity at low temperatures.

Storage

Stored in cool and dry warehouse; Keep away from flame and heat.
