Cobalt
Cobalt is a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. Cobalt is found naturally only in chemically combined form. The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal.
Cobalt is used in the preparation of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys. Cobalt silicate and cobalt(II) aluminate (CoAl2O4, cobalt blue) give a distinctive deep blue color to glass, smalt, ceramics, inks, paints and varnishes.
Cobalt  Cobalt uses and characteristics
Cobalt (Co) has been used for centuries as a pigment in glass, ceramics and paints, notably in Egypt and Persia, Pompei and China, though it wasn't chemically isolated until 1735 by the Swedish chemist Georg Brandt.
Cobalt on its own has few applications; cobalt is mostly used in superalloys for the aerospace industry and in rechargeable batteries.
Cobalt mining and production
Cobalt is mainly produced as a by-product of copper and nickel mining, as it naturally occurs in too low a concentration to be mined on its own. The method of refining depends on the type of ore: copper sulfide ores are roasted and leached, while nickel copper sulfide ores are smelted before leaching. The resulting copper compounds are transformed into a cobalt oxide, which in turn is reduced to cobalt metal by treatment with heat. Improvements in recovery have enabled a lot more cobalt residue to be processed now than in the past.
